Scott has been our pastor since 2003. He is also active in Cooperative Baptist life, having served on the CBF Coordinating Council and is currently serving on the Partnership Committee of CBFNC. Scott also serves as adjunct faculty at Gardner-Webb University’s School of Divinity in the Doctor of Ministry program. He is also chairman of the board of directors for CareNet Counseling of Marion. Scott previously served as Associate Minister at First Baptist Church of Whiteville, NC and Minister of Youth and Family at First Baptist Church of Statesville, NC. Scott is a native of Boone, NC and is married to Hanna. They have two adult children, Laurel and Ben.
Rev. Matthew Roberts, Associate Pastor for Faith Formation
After graduating from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond in 2011, Matt was called to First Baptist Marion as the Associate Pastor of Youth and Children. In 2016, his position became Associate Pastor for Faith Formation and his areas of ministry shifted to Youth, Adult Education, and Saints Alive ministries. He served previously as Minister to Children at Main Street Baptist Church in Emporia, Virginia, and as Minister to Children and Youth at Colonial Place Christian Church in Richmond, Virginia. Matt currently serves on the Western North Carolina Baptist Fellowship Board and was part of the inaugural cohort of CBF Fellows. He was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and is married to Emily. They have a daughter, Chloe.

Mrs. Ruth Wakefield, Director of Music Ministry
Bachelor’s Degree in Church Music from Mars Hill University
Master’s Degree in Piano Pedagogy from East Carolina University
Post-graduate Certification in Estill Voice Training Systems
Ruth taught Choral Music at West McDowell Middle School for four years, was Director of the Music Ministry at Central United Methodist Church in Shelby for three years, and served as Director of Children and Youth Ministries and Church Organist at First United Methodist Church in Marion for four years. Ruth has also been a committed volunteer in the First Baptist Marion Music Ministry in various ways for many years, including directing the Children’s Young Musicians’ Choir and Handbells, accompanying the Senior Adult Saints Alive Choir, and singing in the Sanctuary Choir. She is a piano and voice teacher as well as a talented singer and song writer. She is married to Jeff Wakefield and they have two children, Hope and Sophie.

First Baptist Church of Marion, NC is seeking candidates for the full-time position of Associate Pastor for Children and Families to serve as the staff coordinator of all programs and ministries for children (birth through grade 5), as well as ministry to their parents/families and among the students, staff, and families of the First Baptist Church Children’s Center (Child Development Center).
